Political and civil forces
denounced the statements of the US envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, on forming an African force to protect civilians in Sudan.
A number of experts and observers stated that the US envoy is leading a trend to create a new reality aimed at finding a position for the political forces that were rejected by the Sudanese street because they supported the Janjaweed in the war.
They said that Perriello is looking for personal gains to end his term as envoy to Sudan at the last minute, as he is on the verge of the end of the term without making any progress in the files assigned to him.
The US Special Envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, revealed a new step in the next stage related to stopping the conflict in Sudan, after the Geneva talks faltered in reaching a ceasefire and hostilities, due to the Sudanese army’s refusal to participate in them.
“We have opened channels of communication with the African Union regarding its preparation to prepare and equip forces to intervene, with the aim of protecting civilians in Sudan,” Perriello said on Wednesday during a meeting with a limited group of civil society representatives in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, but he declined to reveal the specific timeframe for this. Perriello continued, stressing that the coming months “will be very important to reopen the discussion on issues that are important to all Sudanese, who seek peace and a peaceful civilian transition in the country.”
